INDIANAPOLIS—The American Journal of Nursing has recognized five Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing (Sigma) titles in six categories as some of the most valuable titles published in 2022 for their annual Book of the Year Awards.
Against Medical Advice: Addressing Treatment Refusal by Luanne Linnard-Palmer, EdD, RN, CPN, and Ellen Christiansen, DNP, RN, FNP-BC, PHNA-BC, received first place in the Child Health and History and Public Policy categories. The book provides proven strategies and step-by-step examples that guide providers to consider the patient’s and family’s point of view, share concerns with other healthcare team members, and negotiate the best possible outcome for all involved. AJN History and Public Policy reviewer Katheren Koehn, MA, RN, FAAN, called Against Medical Advice “a book for our times.”
Take Charge of Your Nursing Career, Second Edition, by Lois Sarah Marshall, PhD, MN, RN, received second place in the Nursing Education/Continuing Education/Professional Development category. Visionary Leadership in Healthcare emphasizes collaboration and partnerships along with a call to move away from hierarchical forms of leadership to more engaged, open, equitable, inclusive, authentic, and caring leadership styles. Reviewer Karen H. Morin, PhD, RN, ANEF, FAAN, says that “While grounded in nursing, this book is relevant to all leaders in healthcare.”
Evidence-Based Practice in Action: Comprehensive Strategies, Tools, and Tips From University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics, Second Edition, by Laura Cullen, DNP, RN, FAAN; Kirsten Hanrahan, DNP, ARNP, CPNP-PC, FAAN; Michele Farrington, BSN, RN, PMGT-BC; Sharon Tucker, PhD, APRN-CNS, PMHCNS-BC, NC-BC, FAAN; and Stephanie Edmonds, PhD, MPH, RN, received second place in the Nursing Research category. Evidence-Based Practice in Action is the only book that encompasses the EBP process, provides frameworks for EBP evaluation and implementation, and incorporates patients throughout. It is sure to inspire readers to use the EBP process, think creatively, and engage patients in co-design for improved outcomes.
