Resolving nurse-on-nurse aggression and bullying improves the nursing profession
New edition of Sigma book includes new topics from relational aggression expert
INDIANAPOLIS – Outside of nursing, most people believe bullies are on playgrounds and in high school locker rooms. Unfortunately, bullies also frequent hospital units, ambulatory care centers, clinics, and even emergency departments. Their targets? Their own nurse colleagues and peers.
In this fully updated, second edition of What to Do When Nurses Hurt Nurses, published by Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing (Sigma), bullying and relational aggression (RA) expert and author Cheryl Dellasega, PhD, CRNP, explores the nature of nurse-on-nurse violence while establishing an action plan for the future. She tackles topics ranging from social media and crucial communications to resiliency and stress management.
“It might seem that RA is benign—just part of the ‘drama’ that women of all ages seem prone to. In reality, this dynamic is a serious threat to the nursing profession,” said Dellasega. “There are legitimate reasons why nurses take on the roles of aggressor, bystander or witness, and victim. There are also things we can do to turn those behaviors around, making the work environment better for everyone involved. That means better patient care, more attractive job sites, and, most important, higher quality of life for the nurses who keep it all going.”
