STTI Expresses Support for Nepal
On behalf of our board of directors, staff, and members worldwide, the Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI) offers sincere condolences to the friends and families of all those who were injured or lost their lives in the Nepal earthquake and its aftershocks. We lift up in support all the nurses and other health workers who are helping to save lives and care for the wounded in Nepal.
We received the following information from Dr. Prakin Suchaxaya, who is gender, equity and human rights coordinator at the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Office for South-East Asia:
"Dr. Lin Aung, WR Nepal; Dr. Roderico Ofrin, coordinator EHA and WHO team (HQ-RO-CO) have been working closely with Ministry of Health and Nutrition, Nepal in the relief efforts and surveillance. Within 24 hours of the earthquake, WHO provided the first tranche of USD $175,000 to the Government of Nepal from the South-East Asia Regional Health Emergency Fund and has deployed eight more emergency health kits containing essential medicines, disposables and instruments to cover the health needs of 80,000 people for the next three months. In addition, the WHO is supporting the deployment of foreign medical teams.
"We understand that the health care facilities are functioning even though the capacity is limited. We see that the hospitals are crowded with injured people. Even severe patients with life-saving machines are on the floor.
"We trust that nurses are doing their best to provide nursing care to meet the needs of the injured and survivors even though they may be tired and some are not well prepared for emergency and trauma care and other health conditions. We would like to send our best wishes to those nurses.
"We hope that nurses and their families have not been much affected by this earthquake.
"Please note that we stand by you during this difficult time and pray for Nepal."
