This mentored writing virtual academy helps Sigma nurses prepare a manuscript for publication. As part of this academy, participants will have the opportunity to work with our faculty to edit a manuscript.

The Virtual Academy: Writing for Publication will focus on the following objectives:

  • Describe steps for developing a manuscript for publication
  • Differentiate formats for writing a clinical review, quality improvement project, evidence-based project, or research focused manuscript
  • Construct a work plan to assist in the development of a manuscript ready for submission
  • Actively participate in critical evaluation and feedback of self and others in relation to manuscript development

This virtual academy is designed for Sigma nurses seeking assistance in getting their work published. More specifically, it is for researchers new to publications or for nurses who have a desire to be published as a single goal or as a component to another goal (i.e., promotion and/or tenure). Additionally, this is an excellent opportunity for nurses at all degree and expertise levels who have completed “works” (e.g., dissertation, evidenced-based project, quality improvement, grant) with the next step being dissemination in published form. These participants can include, but not limited to: 

  • Students of all educational levels
  • Grant recipients
  • Novice to advanced beginner researchers
  • Novice to advanced beginner writers
  • Faculty 
  • Nurses in diverse professional roles 
 
  • Translation of completed research, evidenced-based project, or diverse “works” into a publishable form
  • General components for publishable manuscript in a selected journal
  • Writing process for journal publication vs. other formats of writing
  • Searching for appropriate journals in which to be published
  • Query letters, journal requirements, and author guidelines
  • Keys to successful journal publication
  • Writing pitfalls to address and avoid for journal publication success
  • How to critically evaluate manuscripts, for self and others
  • How to address recommendations by journal reviewers and mentors in a positive manner
     

The virtual academy will consist of: 

  • Interactive live presentations
  • Live discussions during bi-weekly Zoom conference calls
  • Readings will be assigned throughout the virtual academy from Sigma's A Nurse's Step-By-Step Guide to Publishing a Dissertation or DNP Project. (You will receive a FREE electronic copy of this book to use throughout the virtual academy upon acceptance into the program.)
  • Feedback from lead faculty and virtual academy participants on components of your manuscript, and your completed manuscript
    • Faculty feedback will be both verbal and written
    • Participant feedback is encouraged and will also be verbal and written

How is this virtual academy different from the other Sigma academies?

This virtual academy is only completed online, utilizing Zoom video/web conferencing for bi-weekly meetings. There will also be ongoing discussions on The Circle, Sigma's online professional networking platform.

Sigma offers other academies that combine in-person and virtual components over a longer period of time, which differs from our virtual academy.  

Will participating in this academy guarantee I will be published in a nursing journal?

No. At end of program you will have a submission-ready journal; however, acceptance is based upon the discretion of the journal in which you submit your work. All questions about submission should be directed to that journal.

How long is this virtual academy?

This program will last 6 months.
