Sigma titles recognized by American Journal of Nursing Book of the Year Awards

INDIANAPOLIS—The American Journal of Nursing has recognized four Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing (Sigma) titles over six awards as some of the most valuable titles published in 2023 for their annual Book of the Year Awards. 

Taking Action: Top 10 Priorities to Promote Health Equity and Well-Being in Nursing by Susan B. Hassmiller, PhD, RN, FAAN, and Gaea A. Daniel, PhD, RN, received two first place awards in the Health Care Administration and the History and Public Policy categories. AJN History and Public Policy reviewer Katheren Koehn, MA, RN, FAAN, said Taking Action “has an optimistic tone—while the issues of racism, health equity, and barriers to changing our profession can seem overwhelming, the essays are filled with hope for a better future.”

The Innovation Handbook: A Nurse Leader’s Guide to Transforming Nursing by Bonnie Clipper, DNP, MA, MBA, RN, CENP, FACHE, FAAN, received first place in the Professional Issues category and third place in the Health Care Administration category. AJN Professional Issues reviewer Jackie Owens, PhD, RN, CNE, called The Innovation Handbook “readable and clear” and that the information the book contains “will surely lead to both thinking and action.”

Population-Based Public Health Clinical Manual: The Henry Street Model for Nurses, Fourth Edition, by Patricia M. Schoon, DNP, MPH, RN, PHN, and Carolyn M. Porta, PhD, MPH, RN, PHN, SANE-A, FAAN, FNAP, received first place in the Public and Population Health category. The new edition of this title is fully updated and in full color. AJN Public and Population Health reviewer, Barbara J. Polivka, PhD, RN, FAAN, said “The complexity of public health is addressed in a manner that is challenging but not overwhelming.”

Nursing Leadership During Crisis: Insights Guiding Leaders From the Covid-19 Pandemic by Carolyn Miller Reilly, PhD, RN, CHFN, CNE, FAHA, FAAN, Barbara Kaplan, MSN, RN, and Tim Porter-O’Grady, DM, EDD, SCD(H), APRN, FAAN, FACCWS, received second place in the Health Care Administration category. Nursing Leadership During Crisis guides nurse leaders with perspectives from those on the front lines.
