INDIANAPOLIS—What happens in health policy at local, state, and federal levels directly affects patients, nurses, and
nursing practice. However, many healthcare professionals are intimidated by the complexity of the process and do not know how take the first step to implementing policy change. In the second edition of Evidence-Informed Health Policy from Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing (Sigma), authors Jacqueline M. Loversidge and Joyce Zurmehly demystify health policymaking and equip nurses and other healthcare professionals with the knowledge, tools, and confidence to navigate the first of many steps into health policy.
Fortunately, nurses and healthcare providers are skilled in using evidence-based practice (EBP) and have a built-in toolkit that will help them transfer those skills applied to solving clinical problems to solving policy problems. In this book, Loversidge and Zurmehly translate the EBP language of clinical decision-making into an evidence-informed health policy (EIHP) model. They build a foundation for integrating evidence into health policymaking and leveraging dialogue between key stakeholders. The second edition includes fresh perspectives on the use of evidence to inform smart health policy, lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic to strategize for sound policy informed by the best science, a new visual representation of the EIHP model, and beyond-borders strategies to develop a health policy worldview more effectively.
“Nurses are amongst the most inquiring, persistent, yet most impatient of the health providers. They want results. They thrive on moving their patients toward a state of health, and they are becoming ever more skilled at using evidence to do just that,” said author Jacqueline M. Loversidge. “We wrote this book to help the next generation of nursing policy leaders thrive in the political environments where the translation of those evidence-based clinical skills could be used to advance sound health policy.”
