PRETORIA — The Sigma Africa Consortium (Tau Lambda at-Large Chapter, Chi Xi at-Large Chapter, and Chi Omicron at-Large Chapter) of the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing (Sigma) is accepting applications until 15 December 2017 for the Maternal-Child Health Nurse Leadership Academy-Africa (MCHNLA Africa). The Forum of University Nursing Deans of South Africa (FUNDISA) and Sigma’s International Leadership Institute administer the academy mentoring program in partnership with Johnson & Johnson Global Community Impact.

The MCHNLA Africa is an outcomes-focused, highly selective 18-month leadership development experience that pairs maternal-child health nurses and midwives with experienced Leadership Mentors. The academy prepares these nurses and midwives for effective interprofessional team leadership as they strive to improve the quality of healthcare for underserved childbearing women and children up to 5 years old. Since 2004, more than 125 mentor/mentee pairs from over 35 states in North America and four countries in Africa have participated in the academy and improved healthcare outcomes for thousands of mothers and babies.

With the generous support of Sigma and Johnson & Johnson, the 2018-2019 MCHNLA Africa cohort will expand to five countries and have dyads from Ghana, Malawi, South Africa, Swaziland, and Uganda. Sigma membership is not required to participate in this academy.

“As a global organization that brings together top-performing nurses [and midwives] in all disciplines of the profession, Sigma provides care to vulnerable populations,” said Sigma Past President Hester C. Klopper, PhD, MBA, RN, RM, FANSA, FAAN. “Mentees of the Maternal-Child Health Nurse Leadership Academy-Africa achieve significant professional growth during their academy participation. The impact that their work has on this population is outstanding.”
