Top name in home care nursing advises healthcare providers on the challenges and complexities of home-based care

New STTI guidebook shares fundamentals and complexities for providing home healthcare

INDIANAPOLIS — As aging baby boomers search for alternatives to traditional senior care, the demand for home care services is one of the fastest-growing segments of the healthcare market. Aging-in-place is key to keeping older adults healthier, out of acute-care settings, and in their homes longer.

In this practical yet comprehensive guidebook, one of the top names in home care nursing, Tina M. Marrelli, MSN, MA, RN, FAAN, shares her expertise by providing practical questions, discussion topics, and additional resources to prepare and educate a wide range of healthcare providers on home care. These providers include not only home care nurses but also home healthcare business owners, administrators, clinical auditors, policymakers, insurers, physician assistants and nurse practitioners, pharmacists, social workers, and hospital staff who prepare patients to return home.

Home Care Nursing: Surviving in an Ever-Changing Care Environment, published by the Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI), breaks down home care from a big picture view while also providing specifics in terms of policies, procedures, and standardization of care in various settings, including the fundamentals of Medicare and legal regulations. Marrelli’s background in Medicare services, nursing, and consulting offers readers a full range of insight into the fundamentals and complexities of home care as the model of care continues to change.

“This is the first time in history that we have multiple generations of older adults, as well as tremendous growth in the number of the ‘oldest old’ and centenarians, or people over 100 years of age,” Marrelli said. “What this means practically and from a care perspective is that we all need to know more about older adult care. Home care nurses are on the front lines and are able to identify the special needs of this population, such as frailty, nutritional impairment, barriers to care, and other areas to improve care.”
