valverde-webDr. Mercedes Gutiérrez-Valverde has been a member of Sigma’s Tau Alpha Chapter since 2004. Over her 13 years as a Sigma member she has served at local, regional, and international levels. She served as a chapter delegate in the different biennial conventions. She received a grant from Giving Circle of Delta Chapter to attend the Leadership Forum in 2012. She was a member of Sigma’s Globalization Task Force from 2011-2013. Additionally, she was the Regional Coordinator of the Latin American and Caribbean Region (2015-2017 and 2013-2015). She was observer in the Latin American and Caribbean Region group for The Global Advisory Panel of the Future of Nursing & Midwifery (GAPFON®). Currently, she is the Tau Alpha Chapter President-Elect 2016-2018.

Dr. Gutiérrez-Valverde is a Professor and Coordinator for Internationalization and Academic Exchange and International Representative and the president of Biosecurity Committee of the School of Nursing at the Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon (UANL) in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, México. She teaches in the undergraduate and graduate programs. She has the federal profile: Program for Professional Development Teacher and the certification as Nursing Teacher by the Mexican Nursing Certification Council.

Dr. Gutiérrez-Valverde is a Member of the National Researchers System, of The National Council of Science and Technology.  Her research work is in the Diabetes Type 2 and risk factors in adults and in the environment and genetics interaction in the chronic illness. She has publications on indexed journals, book chapters and presentations in different forums, nationally, and internationally. She served as a reviewer and on the editorial board of the international journals.

She participated as a professor in the International Nursing Collaboration PhD at the University of Balearic Islands, Spain, and as visiting professor in the Universidad Autonoma Tomas Frias in Potosi, Bolivia. Currently, she is a visiting professor in the Universidad de los Angeles de Chimbote, in Chimbote, Peru.

She holds membership in professional organizations including Sigma, American Association of Diabetes Educators, The National Nursing Academy of Mexico (ANEM), and the International Society of Nursing in Genetics, where she is part of the Global Membership Committee. She is part of the Global Genomics Nursing Alliance Project (G2NA).

Dr. Gutiérrez-Valverde earned her BN from Universidad Autonoma Metropolitana in the Mexico City and her MSN and DSN from Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon and Certificate in Intensive Care for Adults from Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education.

Dr. Gutiérrez-Valverde was installed onto the Board of Directors in November 2017 at the 44th Biennial Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana. USA.
